Atria Senior Living 2010 Engage Life® Calendar features resident creations

December 9, 2009, Falmouth, Mass. --- Atria Woodbriar resident Edward Griffin has considered painting a “personal pastime” since the veteran Quincy police officer retired in the 80s. But his pastime will soon earn him artistic recognition as one of his paintings is enjoyed by thousands of people across the nation.

Griffin’s tranquil oil painting entitled “Dunes of Cape Cod” will accompany the month of August in Atria Senior Living’s 2010 Engage Life calendar. Over 20,000 calendars have been printed to share with residents, families, staff and friends of Atria’s 126 independent and assisted living communities in 27 states.

A somewhat unlikely start for an artist, Griffin landed in General Patton’s army during the war. He rose to the rank of First Sergeant but was wounded in action. After the service, Griffin worked in the Quincy Police Department for three decades. His interest in painting began when he took lessons with the Quincy Art Association in the 80s.

Griffin thinks of his paintings as “an extension of the views around us.” He enjoys painting landscapes and natural settings, a choice inspired by Dan McElwain, his instructor at the Quincy Art Association many years before. Today, his magnificent landscapes decorate the room he shares with his wife Irene at Atria Woodbriar.

Creative expression is one component of Atria’s Engage Life whole person programming offered weekly in each community. Griffin’s painting featured in the Engage Life Calendar was inspired by the beautiful beaches of Cape Cod.
